When a client has blood-sugar concerns, nutrition professionals and diet books alike often recommend substituting more protein for carbohydrates. In general, this is good advice.
However, the dietary approach to stabilizing blood sugar has another dimension. When we consume proteins, and one or more of the essential amino acids is in short supply, the protein is not fully utilized.
Unfortunately, these unutilized amino acids can be broken down into sugar (glucose) and nitrogen waste products such as ammonia, urea, and uric acid. Thus, even when you substitute protein for carbohydrates, your blood sugar levels may rise - along with the nitrogen waste-products not found in carbohydrates.
These increased nitrogen waste-products can be toxic to individuals with poor kidney function, and excess blood-ammonia is known to be neurotoxic.
